Introduction

Anatomia, published in 1838, was one of the first medical texts written in the Hawaiian language. Its author, Gerrit P. Judd, arrived in Hawaii in 1828 as a member of the Third Missionary Company sent by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. Judd prepared the sixty-page textbook at the request of the Mission for the students of Lahainaluna Seminary. The work was based on Jerome V.C. Smith's The Class-Book of Anatomy, Designed for Schools, Explanatory of the First Principles of Human Mechanism, as the Basis of Physical Education (1834). The textbook included fifty-eight copperplate engravings. The engravings, copied from illustrations in Smith's book, were produced by native Hawaiian students at Lahainaluna.

This exhibit presents Judd's original work. In 2003, the University of Hawaii Press published Anatomia, 1838. This publication includes the Hawaiian-language text from Gerrit P. Judd's original anatomical book, and an English translation of the Hawaiian text by Esther T. Mookini. The Mamiya Medical Heritage Center worked with the Native Hawaiian Center of Excellence to contribute to this publication. The Hawaiian text portion of the publication was taken from the Center's digitized version of Judd's original work. The Center also provided access to the original book to assist with the production process. The new publication's cover reproduces the marble paper used on the cover of the Center's copy of Anatomia : he palapala ia e hoike ai i kea no o ko ke kanaka kino.
