On the completion of his internship, Dr. Akina returned to Honolulu and opened an office for general practice, later specializing in ophthalmology. He was resident physician at Kalaupapa on Molokai in 1936; and during World War II served as an Army medical officer at Tripler Hospital. In 1955 he was appointed City and County Physician at Maluhia Hospital.
Dr. Akina served four terms in the Territorial House of Representatives from 1936-1944, as a Republican from the 5th District on Oahu. From 1933-1939 he was chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture, Immigration and Manufactures. From 1939-1944 he chaired. the House Committee on Social Services and General Welfare. He was a candidate for reelection in 1946, but withdrew because of ill health after being nominated. He also ran in 1948 and lost.
In June, 1950, Dr. Akina married Dr. Eleanore Mayo Green, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Green, at Westville, New Jersey. A son, Henry Green, was born to Dr. and Mrs. Akina. They were later divorced.
Dr. Akina died on June 27, 1976, in Honolulu at the age of 78. He was a member of the Wright Grove Lodge No. 779 A.F. & A.M., the Shriners, Medinah Temple A.A.O.M.S. and the York Rite Bodies. He was a member of the Honolulu County Medical Society, Hawaii Medical Association, the American Medical Association, and a member of the first class of Honolulu Police Reserves.
