Dr. Philip Sample Arthur was born March 8, 1910 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Georgetown College and University Medical School in 1938. He was licensed to practice in Washington, D.C., California and Hawaii (1939).
After graduation from medical school, he spent 18 months at the Kahuku Plantation Hospital under Dr. Rothwell. He returned to the mainland for another 18 months of internship/residency from 1939-1940. He was a resident in Radiology from 1940-1944 at Georgetown University Hospital.
In 1945, Dr. Arthur returned to Hawaii as an assistant in the office of Dr. Jesse W. Smith in Honolulu. He was board certified in Radiology in 1947. In 1948 Dr. Arthur assumed the practice of Dr. A.G. Schnack. Drs. Arthur and Moore announced the opening of their office at 1441 Kapiolani Blvd. for the practice of Radiology in December 1961. Dr. Arthur was one of the founders of the Radiology Group in Hawaii.
Dr. Arthur married Sarah "Sallie" Linn in Washington, D.C., and the couple had six children: Philip S. Jr., Peter Linn, Ann Kathleen (Mrs. Douglas Johnston), Mark Scully, Paul Francis and Mary Patricia (Mrs. Douglas Schwad). The Arthurs bought a classic plantation style house in Kailua, Oahu which had been built for a member of the Robinson family (a historically important family in Hawaii).
Dr. Arthur worked actively to establish Castle Medical Center and also had privileges at St. Francis Hospital, Kapiolani Women's and Children's Hospital and Wahiawa General Hospital. He was a member of the Honolulu County Medical Society, the Hawaii Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the American College of Radiology and the Radiological Society of North America. He served as a Director of the Oahu Chapter of the Hawaii Cancer Society and was Treasurer of the Radiological Society of Hawaii in 1953 and Secretary/Treasurer in 1954 and 1960-61.
Dr. Arthur was active in the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Kailua and a supporter of Kainalu Little League baseball where he served as coach.
Mrs. Arthur died at age 61 on December 14, 1981, and Dr. Arthur died March 26, 1988 at the age of 78.
