WILLIAM DEWEY BALFOUR


William Dewey Balfour
William Dewey Balfour was born in Adams County, Illinois, on May 8, 1898, the son of William Arthur and Judy May (Walker) Balfour. The family moved to Kansas when he was two years old.

During World War I he served as a sergeant with the Kansas National Guard, joining the army in April, 1917 and returning from 14 months overseas in July, 1919.

In 1923 he received his B.S. degree from Washburn College in Topeka, Kansas, and his M.D. from Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri, in 1927. He was a member of Phi Rho Sigma.

Dr. Balfour married Mildred Louise Schnitzer of St. Louis, on June 7, 1927. The couple had two sons: William Dewey, Jr. and John Frederick Balfour.

Coming to the Territory in 1927, Dr. Balfour became assistant to Dr. J.M. Kuhns of Lihue, Kauai.

In 1928 he went back to the Mainland and served as assistant in the pathology department of Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. From 1929 to 1930 Dr. Balfour was an intern in the surgery and diagnostic clinic at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, Michigan.

During 1930 to 1931 he again served as assistant to Dr. Kuhns of Lihue, Kauai. From 1931 to 1940 Dr. Balfour was physician for the Makee Sugar Co. of Kealia, Kauai, which later consolidated with the Lihue Plantation Co. In 1940 he became the physician for the Hawaiian Agricultural Co. of Pahala, Hawaii, and of the Hutchinson Sugar Co. of Naalehu. He was also government physician for Kau and Waiohinu districts. From 1942 until the time of his death he was physician and surgeon for the Wailuku Sugar Co. of Wailuku, Maui. During the period 1931 to 1947 he served as Board of Health doctor.

Dr. Balfour died April 13, 1947, at Wailuku, Maui, at the age of 48.

He was a member of the Maui Medical Society, American Medical Association, Territorial Association of Plantation Physicians, Aloha Shrine, Maui Post No. 8, American Legion, Maui Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce and the Maui Country Club.
