WILLIAM HENRY WINTER


William Henry Winter

William Henry Winter was born on July 1, 1905, in Red Bluff, California.

He attended St. Michael's Preparatory School for Boys in Victoria, British Columbia, which was followed by one year at the University of British Columbia. His medical degree was granted by the medical school of McGill University in 1932.

In January 1934, Dr. Winter came to Honolulu. Until 1936 he served as medical resident and intern at Queen's Hospital. He also served for six months at the Emergency Hospital.

Dr. Winter married Claire MacDermid on November 15, 1934, at Honolulu.

He practiced general medicine in Honolulu for ten years with the exception of seven months in 1937 when he was a doctor for Pan-American Airways on Wake Island.

In addition to his profession, Dr. Winter took an active interest in art, dramatics, shell collecting and chess. In 1947 he received an award of merit from the American Medical Association for an oil painting and a photograph which were hung in the exhibit at the medical convention at Atlantic City. He also had drawings and paintings exhibited by the Hawaiian Physicians' Art Association.

Dr. Winter died May 22, 1948, in Honolulu at the age of 42.

He was a member of the Honolulu County Medical Society, the Hawaii Territorial Medical Association and the Hawaiian Malacological Society, a group of shell collectors.
